What you need
- Wingspan base game: 170 bird cards, food tokens (fish/rodent/berry/seed/invertebrate/wild), 75 egg miniatures, action cubes, bonus cards, 4 player mats + birdfeeder dice tower
Setup
- Give each player: 1 player mat, 8 action cubes, and a personal food/egg/card supply.
- Deal 5 bird cards + 2 bonus cards to each player. Keep 1 bonus card, discard 1.
- For each bird card kept: pay 1 food (any type) to discard OR keep the bird and pay nothing for the card itself (starting food handled next).
- Deal 5 food tokens (any assortment). Then, choosing carefully: keep birds you like, discard others; total starting bird cards + food = 5 (e.g. keep 5 birds and 0 food, or keep 3 birds and 2 food, etc.).
- Fill the birdfeeder dice tower with all 5 dice and shake. Reveal 3 bird cards face-up in the tray.
- Place the round-4 goal tile โ reveal the 4 goals for rounds 1-4.
How to play
- OBJECTIVE: Score the most Victory Points from birds played, bonus cards, end-of-round goals, eggs, tucked cards, and cached food after 4 rounds.
- ROUND STRUCTURE: 4 rounds with DECREASING actions each round โ 8 actions in round 1, 7 in round 2, 6 in round 3, 5 in round 4. Play passes one action at a time.
- ONE OF 4 ACTIONS PER TURN: (A) Play a bird, (B) Gain food, (C) Lay eggs, (D) Draw bird cards.
- (A) PLAY A BIRD: Pay its food cost (icons on the card) plus 1 egg for each bird already in that row past the first. Place in the leftmost open slot of the matching habitat (forest/grassland/wetland).
- (B) GAIN FOOD (forest row): Place your action cube in the leftmost open forest slot. Take food from the birdfeeder equal to the arrow bonus (usually 1-3). Then activate the 'brown' powers of birds to the LEFT of the cube from right-to-left.
- (C) LAY EGGS (grassland row): Place cube in leftmost open grassland slot. Lay eggs equal to arrow bonus (usually 2-4) on your birds. Each bird has a max egg capacity. Then activate brown powers left of cube.
- (D) DRAW BIRD CARDS (wetland row): Place cube in leftmost open wetland slot. Draw bird cards equal to arrow bonus (usually 1-3). Then activate brown powers left of cube.
- BIRD POWERS: Brown (activated when you take that habitat's row action). White (once per turn when triggered). Pink (once per round). Yellow (game-end scoring).
- END OF ROUND: Score the round's end-of-round goal (either 'most X' competition or 'each X' individual). Advance the goal tile down; new goal reveals for next round.
- GAME END SCORING: Bird VP (printed values) + Bonus card VP + End-of-round goal VP + 1 VP per egg + 1 VP per tucked card + 1 VP per cached food.
